Apple has rolled out an emergency software update, urging millions of iPhone users to immediately install the latest versions of its operating system to guard against a serious cyber threat.

The company expanded the release of iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 to cover a broader range of devices, warning that the update includes critical protections against a hacking tool known as DarkSword exploit kit.

According to Apple, the exploit enables web-based attacks that can compromise devices when users visit seemingly legitimate websites infected with malicious code — a tactic referred to as a “watering hole attack.”

Security experts say once activated, the malware can install hidden backdoors, allowing attackers to maintain long-term access, monitor activity, and steal sensitive data. Concerns have intensified after reports that a newer version of the DarkSword toolkit has leaked online, potentially enabling wider use by cybercriminal groups.

Cybersecurity researchers, including teams from Google and Lookout, previously identified DarkSword being used in targeted attacks across multiple countries since mid-2025, exploiting vulnerabilities in Apple devices and the Safari browser.

Experts strongly recommend users update their devices immediately. Individuals at higher risk — such as journalists, activists, or those handling sensitive information — are advised to enable Apple’s Lockdown Mode through device settings for enhanced protection.

Apple has also begun issuing on-screen alerts to users running outdated software, warning that failure to install the update could leave devices exposed to surveillance and data theft.
