Karachi: Aga Khan University hosted a media roundtable ahead of Earth Day 2026, highlighting the urgent need to protect Karachi’s mangrove forests amid growing climate threats.

The session brought together journalists, environmental experts, and stakeholders to discuss the impact of climate change on coastal ecosystems, with a particular focus on mangroves as a natural defence against rising sea levels and extreme weather.

Participants viewed the documentary A Forest in Peril by architect and environmentalist Tariq Alexander Qaiser, which explores the vulnerability of mangrove ecosystems on Bundal Island. The film is part of the “Voices from the Roof of the World” initiative, a global series amplifying climate challenges faced by fragile ecosystems.

Speakers stressed that mangroves play a critical role in protecting coastal communities, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining livelihoods. However, increasing pressure from climate change and urban expansion is accelerating their degradation, raising concerns over long-term environmental and socio-economic impacts.

Executive Director of the initiative Andrew Tkach praised the filmmaker’s efforts to highlight the importance of Karachi’s mangrove forests, calling the work a significant contribution to environmental awareness.

The discussion also underscored the role of storytelling and media engagement in bridging the gap between scientific knowledge, policy action, and public understanding.

Organisers said such initiatives are essential for fostering dialogue, raising awareness, and encouraging sustainable practices as global climate challenges intensify.
