KARACHI: The Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery Pakistan (SONAM, PK), in collaboration with the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) Division of Nursing Services, marked International Nurses and Midwives Day 2026 by recognizing the expanding role of nurses and midwives in strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare system.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, educators, policymakers, students, and nursing leaders from across the country to highlight how nurses and midwives are increasingly contributing beyond traditional caregiving roles, including in clinical leadership, education, research, policy development, and healthcare innovation.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Salimah R. Walani, Dean of SONAM, PK, emphasized that nursing and midwifery offer a highly rewarding career path at both national and global levels, particularly at a time when the world faces a shortage of healthcare professionals.
She stated that nurses and midwives play a vital role in saving lives, improving population health, and strengthening healthcare systems, urging young people to consider these professions as impactful career choices.
Khairunnissa Hooda, Chief Nursing Officer at AKUH, highlighted the importance of leadership in healthcare, noting that nurses and midwives are central to driving innovation and shaping modern health systems.
She said that from clinical settings to administrative leadership, nurses and midwives are actively influencing decision-making and contributing to healthcare transformation, adding that AKUH continues to invest in developing a strong and skilled nursing workforce.
A key feature of the event was the recognition of outstanding professionals through awards honoring excellence in nursing and midwifery. The recipients included individuals recognized for early-career excellence, distinguished academic contribution, and leadership in midwifery practice.
Award winners included healthcare professionals from Aga Khan University Hospital and associated nursing institutions, recognized for their dedication, leadership, and contribution to healthcare services in Pakistan.
The ceremony also included an interactive online quiz competition and a leadership roundtable discussion focusing on the future of nursing and midwifery in Pakistan.
Organizers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing nursing and midwifery through education, clinical excellence, research, and professional development, while encouraging the next generation of healthcare leaders to contribute to a stronger and more resilient health system in the country.
