The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said some leaders are poisoning the
political and investment atmosphere in the country for their personal interests.
The economy is not being allowed to recover because of continuous protests which are
regrettable, it said.
The country cannot afford political instability and chaos but those who want to grab
power are blind to these realities, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of PEW.
He said that failed politicians are bent on making the country a wasteland as development
is impossible in such a situation.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that due to the increase in political temperature, the government
could not focus on social welfare and the country is sinking into problems.
The politics of conflict and protest have caused great damage to the country’s economy,
the people have been suffering from constant inflation, while some politicians are trying
to gain power at any cost which is regrettable, he observed.
Dr. Mughal said that the country’s economy cannot afford more protests, but some
elements are sabotaging the development process under a well-thought-out plan against
which legal action should not be delayed.
He said that the politicians who see the government as a collection of flaws should not
forget what they did during their government.
During the former regime, false cases against opponents were set up in the name of
accountability, NAB was blackmailed and used against political rivals, spy agencies were
used for arm-twisting and to pass laws, and relations with friendly countries were
damaged.
The former government did nothing apart from stopping important projects, making
baseless allegations and actions against judges of the superior judiciary, and making life
difficult for opposition leaders, he said.
