BEIJING: Humanoid robots are competing in everything from sprinting and football to kickboxing and gymnastics as the five-day World Humanoid Robot Games get underway in Beijing, turning the event into a major showcase for China’s rapidly expanding robotics industry.
The second edition of the competition brings together robots designed to imitate human movement and perform tasks in environments ranging from sports arenas to factories, restaurants and offices.
The humanoid robot games have evolved from small events involving university teams and hobbyists into a national technology showcase. Chinese state media has increasingly highlighted the competition as companies use it to demonstrate how their machines could perform practical tasks outside controlled laboratory settings.
Robots Put to the Test
The competition includes events based on traditional human sports, alongside challenges designed specifically for machines.
Humanoid robots have competed in 100-metre races, long jump, weightlifting, football, gymnastics, kickboxing and dexterity contests.
The machines must do more than simply move quickly. Staying balanced, recovering after a fall and completing tasks without damaging their hardware have become important measures of performance.
During one 100-metre preliminary race, a humanoid robot fell after crossing the finish line and another machine caught fire, prompting staff and firefighters to intervene.
The incident highlighted the physical limitations that robotics companies continue to face as they attempt to develop machines capable of operating reliably in the real world.

From Sports to the Workplace
The games also test robots in simulated working environments.
Competitors are challenged with tasks such as cable assembly, restaurant service, office activities and emergency-response scenarios.
Organisers and participating companies see these events as a way to demonstrate how humanoid robots could eventually move beyond entertainment and perform repetitive or physically demanding jobs.
The emphasis on practical applications has attracted increasing interest from commercial robotics companies seeking to prove that their machines can operate outside demonstrations and controlled testing facilities.
Chinese Robotics Firms Showcase New Machines
Several Chinese robotics companies have brought their latest humanoid platforms to the competition.
Tiangong robots have competed in athletics and weightlifting, while Unitree machines have taken part in kickboxing. Booster Robotics has entered football teams, while Galbot robots have appeared in football and tennis demonstrations.
Other machines have competed in dexterous hand challenges designed to test their ability to manipulate objects with precision.
The event has also featured demonstrations involving humanoid robots interacting with human performers, adding a theatrical element to the technology showcase.
A Glimpse of the Robotics Race
The World Humanoid Robot Games reflect China’s broader push to develop advanced robotics and artificial intelligence.
For manufacturers, success is no longer simply about making a robot walk. Machines must increasingly demonstrate balance, coordination, dexterity, endurance and the ability to respond to unpredictable situations.
The competition therefore offers a rare public glimpse into how far humanoid robotics has progressed — and how many challenges remain before such machines become common in everyday workplaces.
As the games continue in Beijing, the spectacle of robots racing, fighting and playing football is also serving as a practical test of whether humanoid machines can become reliable tools beyond the arena.
