Prince William has led tributes to England’s national football team after its dramatic 2-1 FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, praising the players for their determination and inspiring performances throughout the tournament.

In a personal message released by Kensington Palace, the Prince of Wales said he was “gutted” by the result but commended the squad for its resilience.

“The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high,” he wrote, signing the message with “W”, indicating that he personally authored the statement in his role as Patron of the Football Association.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also expressed his disappointment following England’s exit but praised the team’s commitment and performances.

“The passion and energy they’ve shown representing the badge has made us all proud,” the Prime Minister said.

England appeared on course for a place in the World Cup final after Anthony Gordon gave the Three Lions the lead in the 55th minute in Atlanta. However, defending champions Argentina staged a late comeback with goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez to book a place in the final against Spain.

The Royal Family also shared a separate message of support on social media alongside a photograph of England captain Harry Kane embracing teammate Jude Bellingham after the match.

“Commiserations to Harry and the team. While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation – and will rise again,” the statement read.

Prince William, a well-known football supporter and Patron of the Football Association, regularly attends major England fixtures and has consistently backed the national team during international tournaments.

England’s defeat ended another promising World Cup campaign, but messages of support from senior national figures reflected widespread appreciation for the team’s efforts despite the heartbreaking semifinal loss.
