Colombia secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Ghana 1-0 in Kansas City on Friday. Jhon Arias scored the only goal as Nestor Lorenzo’s side extended its unbeaten run and booked a last-16 meeting with Switzerland.

Arias found the net in the 14th minute. He calmly finished Luis Suarez’s precise cross after the striker replaced the injured Jhon Cordoba early in the match.

Cordoba left the field in the eighth minute with a suspected groin injury. However, Suarez made an immediate impact by creating the winning goal.

Colombia controlled possession throughout the contest. The South Americans looked comfortable despite the intense heat, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius.

Thousands of Colombia supporters filled the stadium. Their chants and yellow shirts created a home-like atmosphere in Kansas City.

Luis Diaz came close to doubling Colombia’s lead several times. First, he struck the side netting before halftime. Later, he thought he had scored after finishing Arias’ cross. However, the assistant referee ruled the goal offside.

Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi delivered an impressive performance. He produced several crucial saves to keep his side in the game until the final whistle.

Despite Ghana’s efforts, Antoine Semenyo rarely found space against Colombia’s organized defense. Lorenzo’s backline stayed disciplined and limited clear scoring opportunities.

Colombia advanced after finishing an unbeaten group-stage campaign. The team topped Group K with strong performances against Portugal, Uzbekistan, DR Congo, and Ghana.

The victory also strengthened South America’s presence in the knockout stage. Colombia joined Argentina, Brazil, and surprise package Paraguay in the Round of 16.

Colombia will face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver for a place in the quarterfinals.

The match also made tournament history. Both teams made injury substitutions before the 15-minute mark after Marvin Senaya suffered a hamstring injury for Ghana.
