The Gilgit Baltistan solar project received renewed support after Shehbaz Sharif announced that the federal government would bear project expenses. The announcement came during a review meeting held in Islamabad. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the initiative aims to improve access to reliable and sustainable energy in the region.

Moreover, the Gilgit Baltistan solar initiative reflects broader efforts to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure. Authorities were directed to accelerate implementation and ensure transparency throughout execution. Therefore, independent third-party validation will be introduced at different stages of the project.

Shehbaz Sharif Reviews Solar Expansion

During the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif instructed authorities to complete the project as quickly as possible. He emphasised that transparent implementation remains essential for public confidence.

Furthermore, the review focused on ongoing and upcoming solar projects in the region. Officials briefed participants on timelines and progress milestones. Therefore, project monitoring is expected to continue throughout execution.

Gilgit Baltistan Solar Energy Development

The Gilgit Baltistan solar programme includes multiple renewable energy initiatives across the region. Officials informed the meeting that an 18MW solarisation project for government buildings is already being implemented.

Moreover, government buildings in Gilgit and Diamer divisions are expected to complete solarisation by December. Work in Baltistan division is targeted for completion by October. Therefore, public infrastructure remains a major focus of the energy transition plan.

Household Solar Project Expansion

Authorities also shared updates on an 82MW solar energy initiative designed for residential areas. The project covers homes in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas, and Khaplo.

Furthermore, the programme aims to improve electricity access and support affordable energy consumption. Officials stated that work is currently underway in these areas. Therefore, households are expected to benefit from expanded renewable energy capacity.

Gilgit Baltistan Solar Transparency Measures

The government announced that independent third-party validation would support project oversight. This measure aims to improve accountability and transparency at each implementation stage.

Moreover, authorities intend to ensure project standards are maintained throughout construction. Therefore, monitoring systems will remain part of the overall delivery framework.

Renewable Energy Plans in Pakistan

The Gilgit Baltistan solar initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader focus on renewable energy and infrastructure modernisation. The 100MW project had previously received approval from economic authorities before moving into implementation stages.

Furthermore, officials continue to emphasise uninterrupted and sustainable power supply for the region. Therefore, solar investment remains a key part of long-term energy planning.
