President Asif Ali Zardari attended the commissioning ceremony as the chief guest, alongside Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, who also graced the occasion. Senior officials from the Pakistan Navy and the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) were present at the event.
Addressing the ceremony, President Zardari termed the induction of the HANGOR-class submarine a “historic milestone” in strengthening Pakistan’s naval defence architecture. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a “robust, balanced and credible defence posture,” stating that the country remains fully capable of defending its sovereignty, protecting maritime interests, and securing its economic lifelines.
The Naval Chief highlighted that increasing disruptions at key maritime choke points are posing growing risks to global trade and energy security. He stressed the need for technologically advanced naval forces to ensure a stable and rules-based maritime order.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the HANGOR-class submarines are equipped with advanced weapon systems, modern sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. These capabilities are expected to significantly enhance Pakistan Navy’s operational reach, deterrence capability, and underwater warfare strength.
The Naval Chief said the submarines will play a crucial role in safeguarding Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region, ensuring maritime security and regional stability.
He also recalled the historical significance of the name “HANGOR,” referring to the 1971 submarine that became the first since World War II to sink an enemy warship, describing it as a symbol of naval legacy and courage.
The commissioning of the HANGOR-class submarine was described as another reflection of the deep strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. Both countries continue to collaborate closely in defence production and maritime security initiatives.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces also congratulated the Pakistan Navy and the nation on achieving this milestone, terming it a major step forward in strengthening national defence capabilities.
