Lahore: Maulana Fazlur Rehman has urged Gulf countries to reconsider their security arrangements, arguing that the presence of US military bases in the region has increased strategic risks rather than providing stability.

Speaking at a meeting with senior journalists in Lahore, he warned that intensifying global rivalries and shifting geopolitical dynamics could push the world toward a broader conflict. He also linked international tensions with Pakistan’s domestic instability, saying policy inconsistency continues to deepen internal challenges.

Fazlur Rehman praised Pakistan’s diplomatic role in ongoing US-Iran mediation efforts, stating that Islamabad is attempting to help prevent escalation into a wider war. However, he cautioned that continued tensions between major powers could still lead to a larger confrontation.

On regional issues, he welcomed Pakistan’s defence cooperation with Saudi Arabia, describing it as important for regional stability. Regarding Afghanistan, he said differing timelines between Islamabad and Kabul were contributing to a policy deadlock.

The JUI-F chief also commented on domestic politics, calling for the release of former prime minister Imran Khan and stating that although contacts had taken place with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, no breakthrough was achieved.

He further criticised governance continuity, electoral processes, and policy implementation issues, while claiming that both global democracy and communism were weakening in favour of mixed governance models involving capitalism and authoritarian elements.

The briefing was attended by senior journalists and political figures, reflecting the significance of his remarks amid ongoing regional and domestic political uncertainty.
