NEW YORK : The world’s oldest captive pigeon, named Sugar, has lived to be over 44 years old. The average lifespan of pigeons and doves is usually 20 years, but Sugar lived twice that. Sugar was born on June 23, 1981, and spent most of his time in the United States with his owner, Devin Orender. The two used to watch TV programs and listen to music. According to Devin, Sugar loved him dearly and would be sad in his absence. Sugar beat the previous record by more than 15 years. Devin had hoped to celebrate by the time he reached 50. However, Sugar died a week ago. Sugar will be recognized as the world’s longest-lived pigeon, according to available records.
