Bannu: A suicide car bomb attack targeting the Domel Police Station in Bannu left at least five civilians dead and 13 others injured, including a police officer, officials confirmed on Friday.

According to initial reports, an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into the rear side of the police station, triggering a powerful blast followed by an exchange of gunfire. The intensity of the explosion was heard miles away, causing widespread panic in the area.

Among the deceased were four members of the same family — a husband, wife, daughter, and son — highlighting the devastating impact on civilians.

The explosion completely destroyed the police station’s sentry post and reduced a significant portion of the building to rubble. Nearby residential areas also suffered severe damage, with several houses collapsing and multiple individuals trapped under debris.

Rescue teams from Rescue 1122 responded promptly and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, where several victims are reported to be in critical condition.

District Emergency Officer Bakhtullah Wazir confirmed the casualties and said that search and rescue operations were ongoing. He added that continuous rainfall hampered relief efforts, making rescue operations more challenging.

Following the cessation of gunfire, rescue personnel launched a full-scale operation to clear debris and recover those trapped. Local mosques made announcements urging residents to donate blood and assist in relief activities, while citizens actively participated in rescue efforts.

Security forces cordoned off the area and initiated a clearance operation, as authorities continued to assess the extent of the damage and casualties.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, he reiterated the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism from the country.

Bannu district has witnessed a surge in militant violence in recent months, with repeated attacks targeting civilians, police, and local jirga members. Security forces have carried out multiple operations in the region to dismantle militant networks.

According to the Annual Security Report 2025 by Centre for Research and Security Studies, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has experienced a sharp rise in terrorism, with fatalities increasing from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025.
