On Memorial Day, President Donald J. Trump led a solemn tribute to America’s fallen service members at Arlington National Cemetery, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and honoring the ultimate sacrifice made by the nation’s heroes.

“Our republic stands because of those who answered the call of duty,” said Trump. “They gave everything—leaving a debt we can never repay. That debt only deepens with time.”

Trump acknowledged the pain endured by families who’ve lost loved ones, describing the absence left behind as “an unfillable void and unbreakable silence.”

This year’s observance carries added significance, as the nation marks 250 years since the first American patriots gave their lives in battle.

Vice President JD Vance also addressed the ceremony, calling on Americans to honor the fallen by treating military lives as “the most precious resource.” He stressed that future sacrifices must only be asked when absolutely necessary, and that citizens should strive to live in a way that is worthy of the freedoms secured by those who served.

“Let’s build a better country,” Vance said, “a nation truly deserving of their sacrifice.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reflected on the motivation of American soldiers: “They fight not out of hate for the enemy, but out of love for what they protect.” He emphasized that peace, the ultimate goal, is only attainable through strength and preparedness.

Air Force Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reminded the nation that the burden of remembering the fallen lies with the living. “Their legacy is in our hands,” he said. “It’s our duty to honor their memory by the lives we lead.”
