Fuel Prices Remain Unchanged Despite Global Drop; Govt to Invest Savings in Infrastructure

How much of an increase is feared in petroleum prices from Jan 15?

The federal government has decided to keep fuel prices unchanged for the next two weeks, despite a significant decline in global oil rates. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced during a cabinet meeting in Islamabad that the savings from lower international prices will instead be allocated to national development initiatives.

A major part of these funds will go toward upgrading the N-25 highway in Balochistan—connecting Chaman, Quetta, Kalat, Khuzdar, and Karachi—into a dual carriageway built to motorway standards.

As per the government’s decision, petrol will continue to be priced at Rs254.63 per litre, while high-speed diesel will remain at Rs258.64 per litre.

This announcement comes shortly after the Prime Minister had hinted at a possible reduction in fuel prices. However, he confirmed a decrease in electricity rates by Rs7.50 per unit for all consumers, including businesses, as a relief measure coordinated with the finance and energy ministries.

Many consumers had anticipated a cut of up to Rs8 per litre in petroleum prices, following the global trend, but the government chose not to pass on this benefit, citing the need to fund essential infrastructure projects.
