Confident New Zealand Ready to Face Strong South Africa in Champions Trophy Semi-final

New Zealand are heading into their Champions Trophy semi-final against South Africa on Wednesday in Lahore with confidence, having recently beaten the Proteas at the same venue during a tri-series last month.

Although the Black Caps lost to India in their final Group A match in Dubai on Sunday, captain Tom Latham believes that result won’t affect their mindset heading into the semi-final. Instead, their successful chase of 305 against South Africa in Lahore — powered by Kane Williamson’s 133 — along with a win against Pakistan in the same tri-series, gives them added belief.

Latham highlighted the value of having played South Africa in Pakistan recently, saying the team can draw from that experience as they aim to deliver their best performance in the crucial knockout match.

New Zealand’s place in the semi-finals was already secured before the loss to India, and they were aware they would need to travel back to Pakistan for the next stage. Latham downplayed the impact of the travel, saying the team’s focus is simply on turning up and giving their best, regardless of venue.

With a place in the ICC final on the line, Latham acknowledged the challenge posed by South Africa, who topped Group B ahead of Australia and impressed with strong performances. He praised their all-round strength across batting, bowling, and fielding, predicting a highly competitive match.

New Zealand’s sharp fielding has been a standout feature of their campaign so far, highlighted by Glenn Phillips’ spectacular one-handed catch to dismiss Virat Kohli. Latham credited this to the team’s positive attitude in the field.

The first semi-final, between India and Australia, will take place in Dubai on Tuesday.
