The Southern Illinois Swimming and Diving team is making waves as they send two exceptional swimmers, Celia Pulido and Alex Santiago, to compete at both the men’s and women’s NCAA Championships. This achievement places Southern Illinois among the select few mid-major programs with representation at both championships and marks their first dual presence since 1992.
Head coach Geoff Hanson expressed his pride in the selection of Pulido and Santiago, stating, “Celia and Alex will represent the Salukis very well on the national stage.”
Celia Pulido secured her spot at the NCAA Women’s Championship in Athens, Georgia, scheduled from March 20th to March 23rd, following a stellar performance at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Pulido shattered conference records in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly, earning her the title of MVC Swimmer of the Year. Hanson commented on Pulido’s upcoming appearance, noting her determination to improve on last year’s performance.
On the other hand, Alex Santiago’s outstanding performance at the Mid-American Conference Championship earned him a place at the NCAA Men’s Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana, from March 27th to March 30th. Santiago was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the Year and set conference records in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events. Hanson praised Santiago’s remarkable progress since joining the team as an unrecruited walk-on, highlighting his potential to exceed expectations at the championship.
