Ahmedabad, India – In a shocking incident at Gujarat University, two international students were hospitalized after being assaulted in their hostel for offering namaz. The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, has led to the arrest of two individuals, with a search underway for more suspects.
The arrested individuals, identified as Hitesh Mevada and Bharat Patel, are believed to be part of a group of 20-25 assailants who attacked the students. The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting, unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt, damage to property, and criminal trespass.
DCP (Zone 7) Tarun Duggal stated that the police are actively pursuing the remaining suspects, with nine teams formed to investigate the matter. The Ministry of External Affairs has condemned the incident, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirming that one of the injured students has been discharged from the hospital.
According to reports, the violence erupted when a group of individuals objected to the international students offering namaz in the hostel premises. The clash took place in the A-block hostel where 75 international students were residing.
Gujarat University Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta expressed concern over the incident, stating that the university and authorities are taking the matter seriously. She assured that an investigation is underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for action to ensure the safety and security of international students in India.
