KARACHI: In the wake of the deadly Lyari building collapse and the arrest of multiple officials, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has announced a citywide crackdown on unauthorized constructions across Karachi.
The authority has unveiled a firm action plan to identify and demolish all illegal and ongoing unapproved structures. The demolition costs will be borne by the property owners, and failure to pay will lead to cost recovery through tax mechanisms.
The campaign will start in densely populated neighborhoods, with support from local district administrations. SBCA has pledged to ensure strict adherence to safety standards during demolition activities.
All relevant SBCA personnel, including Additional Directors, District Directors, Regional Directors, and the Director of Demolition, have been instructed to begin operations without delay. The authority will also submit daily progress updates to the provincial government.
This move follows Thursday’s arrests in connection with the Lyari building collapse, which claimed more than 25 lives. Police detained over 10 individuals, including seven SBCA officials and flat owners from the collapsed building in Baghdadi area.
Sources confirm that the arrested SBCA staff were directly involved in approving and overseeing the building’s construction.
