MUSIC DIPLOMACY BOOSTS CULTURAL TIES BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND PAKISTAN.

Karachi, May 2024 – The acclaimed American folk music band, Raining Jane, recently visited Karachi, the final stop on their two-week tour of Pakistan. During their stay in Karachi, they led student jam-and-learn sessions, workshops for musicians, and staged several inspiring musical performances, engaging with music fans from across Karachi. Working with the Arts Council of Pakistan and the National Academy of Performing Arts, the band fell in love with the vibrancy of the Karachi music scene. “The warmth and hospitality of Pakistan has been overwhelmingly amazing; the love we feel being here and the joy that this experience has brought is life changing. It’s been an honor to connect with so many talented individuals and contribute to meaningful cross-cultural dialogue through our music,” noted Mai Bloomfield, Raining Jane vocalist and cello player.

In Karachi, Raining Jane began with an inspiring workshop at the Arts Council, where they worked with 50 children from Karachi’s Lyari area. The band introduced these young music enthusiasts to the world of folk music, providing instruments and mentorship, fostering talent and confidence.

Fellow musician Consul General Conrad Tribble hosted Raining Jane at his residence. Pakistani musicians from Sindh and Balochistan attended the event, showcasing the amazing local talent. Similar to America’s rich cultural heritage, Pakistan has its own vibrant traditions, which were on full display! A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to participate in the National Academy of Performing Arts’ Women’s Performing Arts Festival. There, the band led a workshop focused on performance skills, songwriting, and personal artistic development. Theyclosed out the day with a concert that had the audience clapping and singing.

As Raining Jane bid farewell to Karachi, they hosted one final grand music concert at the U.S. Consulate General in Karachi, where they performed their iconic tracks and showcased their Urdu skills by playing the Pakistani national song ‘Dil, Dil, Pakistan’. The concert was attended by dignitaries, musicians, and members of the arts community and served as a musical celebration focusing on the shared love of music that both the United States and Pakistan cherish. “The opportunity to hear Raining Jane play alongside some of the best musicians in the region was unforgettable. There is something really special when you have that kind of American and Pakistani fusion music, it really shows how similar we all are” remarked Consul General Tribble.

Raining Jane is one of over three dozen American musical artists engaging globally through the U.S. Department of State’s Global Music Diplomacy Initiative, which seeks to foster cross-cultural understanding through music.
