The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has officially extended an invitation to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to join the upcoming season of the FIH Pro League, following New Zealand’s withdrawal due to financial constraints.
This unexpected opportunity paves the way for Pakistan to rejoin elite-level international hockey and work toward improving its global ranking after years of limited exposure at the highest level.
New Zealand had originally earned their Pro League spot by defeating Pakistan in the FIH Nations Cup final held in Malaysia. However, with the Black Sticks pulling out, the vacant slot has now been offered to the runner-up — Pakistan.
In that final, Pakistan began strongly but suffered a heavy 6-2 defeat. New Zealand dominated early, with a penalty corner goal in the sixth minute and another before the first quarter ended. Three additional goals in the second quarter gave them a 5-0 lead by halftime. Although Zikriya Hayat managed to score for Pakistan in the third quarter, the team failed to convert five crucial penalty corners, which proved costly.
Despite the disappointing result, Pakistan’s entry into the Pro League presents a major chance for revival in international hockey and a renewed push to restore its former glory on the world stage.
