The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced the installation of e-gates at the international terminals of Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad airports. These advanced systems will be placed in both the arrival and departure lounges to streamline the immigration process, reduce waiting times, and eliminate long queues for travelers.
The e-gates will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for automated document verification and biometric identification, enhancing both speed and security. As part of this initiative, around 100 e-gates will be installed over the next two years.
According to PAA officials, a German team of experts has finalized the initial design of the system. A three-day workshop was also held in Karachi, where consultations took place with key stakeholders, including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
This project is a step toward bringing Pakistan’s airports in line with global aviation standards and improving the passenger experience. Adnan Ahmed, Additional Director of Engineering Services, confirmed to The Express Tribune that the project began in September last year and has been awarded to M2P, a well-known German firm specializing in airport systems.
E-gates are expected to automate immigration procedures, making air travel more efficient, secure, and convenient for international passengers.
