In a landmark development for Pakistan’s healthcare sector, doctors have successfully performed the country’s first liver transplant for a colon cancer patient whose cancer had spread to the liver, according to ProPakistani.
The complex procedure took place at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, where a woman from Karachi, originally diagnosed with lower colon cancer, underwent a liver transplant after the disease progressed to her liver.
Surgeons completely removed her cancer-affected liver and replaced it with a portion of her husband’s donated liver, making it a unique and life-saving intervention.
Doctors stated that the patient’s liver was entirely damaged by the cancer, leaving a transplant as the only option. Thanks to her husband’s donation of the left lobe, the transplant was successfully carried out.
Medical sources have confirmed that the patient has now fully recovered from cancer and is enjoying a healthy, normal life — marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s cancer and transplant treatment capabilities.
