ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday paid tribute to the framers of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973, calling it the foundation of Pakistan’s parliamentary democratic system and a symbol of national unity.

In his message on Constitution Day, the prime minister said the unanimously adopted Constitution on April 10, 1973 established a strong institutional framework for governance and defined the legal, moral and administrative responsibilities of both the state and its citizens.
He described the Constitution as a “sacred contract” that safeguards fundamental human rights and ensures their implementation through a comprehensive legal framework. “Today, we celebrate the approval of the Constitution with a spirit of national pride,” he said.
Sharif added that the Constitution remains a shining symbol of federation and cohesion, with all federating units playing their role in strengthening national unity and economic development.
Meanwhile, Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani termed the 1973 Constitution a cornerstone of Pakistan’s democratic identity, emphasizing its role in protecting provincial rights and maintaining balance among state institutions.
He paid tribute to the leadership of the time, particularly Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, for building consensus on the Constitution. Gilani stressed that respect for the Constitution, rule of law and democratic values is essential for national stability and progress.
He also highlighted that the Constitution guarantees equal rights for all citizens, including women and minorities, while promoting transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq echoed similar sentiments, stating that the Constitution serves as the backbone of democracy and institutional stability in the country.
He termed April 10, 1973 a defining moment in Pakistan’s history, noting that the consensus Constitution laid the groundwork for democratic continuity and protection of citizens’ rights.
Ayaz Sadiq reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to strengthening governance, promoting transparency and upholding constitutional supremacy. He also urged political unity and called on the younger generation to understand the Constitution and actively contribute to national development.
Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah also extended congratulations to the nation on the occasion.
The day was marked with renewed calls for adherence to constitutional principles, rule of law and democratic continuity as key pillars for Pakistan’s progress and stability.
