NADRA has rolled out a new version of the Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) that does not include a chip but offers enhanced digital features and greater accessibility. This updated card includes a QR code, allowing access to the holder’s digital identity through the PakID mobile app—similar to the previous chip-based version.
People holding older non-chip CNICs can now renew them directly into this upgraded, chip-free but digitally functional format. This version serves as a more affordable alternative to the Smart National Identity Card (SNIC), streamlining the renewal or modification process.
Like SNICs, the updated CNICs will include bilingual information in both Urdu and English, aligning with passports and other official identification.
A standout feature of the new CNIC is its lifetime validity option for organ donors, who will also have a special symbol on their cards. Similarly, persons with disabilities are eligible for lifetime validity.
The fee structure is also more affordable than that of SNICs:
- Normal processing (1 month): Rs400
- Urgent processing (2 weeks): Rs1,150
- Executive processing (9 days): Rs2,150
Citizens can apply by visiting a NADRA center or using the online PAK-IDENTITY portal, where they must create an account. For straightforward renewals with no information changes, only a recent photograph is required.
