The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named former New Zealand cricketer Mike Hesson as the new head coach for Pakistan’s men’s white-ball teams (ODIs and T20s), as per an official press release.
Hesson takes over a position that became vacant after Gary Kirsten resigned just seven months into the role on October 29, citing disagreements with the PCB. Aaqib Javed had temporarily filled the position and oversaw the team through the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.
Welcoming the new appointment, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi posted on X, stating:
“After carefully reviewing numerous applications, I’m pleased to announce that former New Zealand player and accomplished coach Mike Hesson will lead our white-ball team starting May 26.” He expressed optimism about Hesson’s impact on Pakistan cricket moving forward.
Hesson, who currently serves as head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), brings international experience, having previously coached national teams including New Zealand and Kenya.
In a related development, Naqvi also announced that Aaqib Javed has been appointed as Director of High Performance. “To further develop our cricketing infrastructure, Aaqib will support Mike Hesson in shaping the future of Pakistan cricket,” Naqvi added.
Aaqib Javed stepped down from his coaching role after the Champions Trophy concluded in early 2024.
This shakeup in coaching staff comes shortly before Pakistan hosts Bangladesh for a five-match T20 series beginning May 25. Pakistan’s recent performances in major international tournaments — including the 2023 Asia Cup, the 2023 ODI World Cup, and the 2024 T20 World Cup — have raised serious concerns, prompting structural changes at the top.
