Following court directives, the Karachi Commissioner has canceled the license of the officially sanctioned Korangi Road cattle market, sparking strong resistance from traders.
The market’s management plans to contest the decision in the Sindh High Court and has appealed to the Chief Justice for urgent intervention.
Market Administrator Sardar Sohail stated that the license was obtained legally through a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) auction, with a winning bid of Rs7 million. It was formally issued on May 9 after approvals from KMC, the Deputy Commissioner of Korangi, local police, and other authorities.
Located on a ten-acre site, the market currently hosts over 250 traders and farmers with around 4,000 animals. The area has developed into a functional temporary community, offering food stalls, parking, and digital banking services. Sellers from Punjab and various parts of Sindh have joined locals, making the market a crucial source of livelihood.
Meanwhile, the commissioner’s office has permitted 14 official cattle markets across Karachi for the upcoming Eidul Azha. However, visitors have expressed frustration over the steep rise in animal prices.
