Jurgen Klopp celebrates his first win as Germany manager against Serbia.

Jurgen Klopp celebrated his first win as Germany manager on Thursday. Germany beat Serbia 2-0 in their third UEFA Nations League match.

Florian Wirtz and Tom Bischof scored for Germany. The hosts also produced a much-improved performance after a difficult start under Klopp.

Germany opened Klopp’s tenure with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands. They then suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Greece last weekend.

A draw or another defeat against Serbia would have left Klopp without a win in his first three games. Instead, Germany delivered a convincing response in Munich.

“The mix of football and attitude was top level today. I told the boys that this has to be our benchmark,” Klopp told public broadcaster ZDF.

Young Germany Impresses

Klopp selected an entirely new starting lineup for the Serbia match. He also handed three players their international debuts.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Jonas Urbig started in goal. Freiburg forward Derry Scherhant and Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt also made their Germany debuts.

Celtic’s Mika Baur entered the game in the 77th minute. His appearance made him the 1,000th player to represent Germany.

The young side looked sharper than it did during the defeat to Greece. Serbia, however, offered limited attacking threat.

Aleksandar Pavlovic, Serge Gnabry and Bischof all created chances during the opening half-hour. Serbia managed only one dangerous counter-attack through Filip Kostic.

Wirtz and Bischof Put Germany Ahead

Germany finally broke the deadlock shortly before half-time.

Wirtz produced clever footwork inside the penalty area. He weaved through several defenders before hitting the post.

Bischof reacted quickly to the rebound. He found the net from close range and gave Germany a 1-0 lead.

Germany continued to dominate after the break. The hosts pushed Serbia deep into its own half.

Juventus forward Nick Woltemade missed a major chance in the 59th minute. He fired over the bar from close range.

Wirtz then doubled Germany’s advantage moments later.

The Liverpool player controlled the ball brilliantly inside the box. He created space before placing his shot into the bottom corner.

Klopp Praises Wirtz

Klopp singled out Wirtz for praise after the match. The Liverpool midfielder has faced criticism in England over his recent club form.

“The rhythm has to be: easy, easy, easy, Flo, Flo, Flo, Wirtz, Wirtz, Wirtz,” Klopp said.

He added that Wirtz’s performance could benefit both Germany and the player himself.

Bischof also praised Klopp after the final whistle.

“Jurgen is a coach that pulls people along with him. We saw that today and I hope it continues into the future,” Bischof said.

Germany’s second goal effectively settled the contest. A Mexican wave then moved around the Munich stadium as supporters celebrated Klopp’s first victory.

The result gives Germany renewed confidence as Klopp begins his attempt to rebuild the national team and restore its place among international football’s leading sides.
