Karachi Pakistan : Addressing a seminar on the causes and solutions of traffic accidents organized by the Medical and Social Welfare Committee of the Arts Council of Pakistan, the speakers emphasized that if the implementation of the law is ensured, traffic accidents can be reduced to a large extent.
More than 500 people affected by traffic accidents are brought to hospitals in the city on a daily basis, Of which 40 percent of people die, The seminar held on Saturday was also attended by Advisor to the Governor of Sindh Tariq Mustafa, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, host Dr. Qaiser Sajjad, MS Sabir Memon of Trauma Center, Dr. Irfan incharge of Jinnah Hospital Emergency, Edhi Foundation head Faisal Edhi, Dr. Aftab Imam, MQM leader and former member of the National Assembly Kishore, PMA Secretary General Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, Traffic Engineering Bureau representative Mohib Ahmed, Traffic Accident Police Research Ali Sahag and others. Bouquets were presented to the guests, Advisor to the Governor of Sindh, Tariq Mustafa, said that there is an urgent need to introduce a Karachi Charter of Traffic Management to improve the traffic system.
He said that road accidents are a very important issue, people do not follow the rules, If a traffic officer stops them, they immediately take out their mobile phone from their pocket to talk to someone about the officer, or they take out their wallet to serve the officer. He said that traffic enforcement should start from homes, and the public has an important role to play in this.
DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah said that the main reason for the accidents that occur in the city is speeding, untrained and child driving. 55% of accidents in the city are caused by motorcycles, 35% of accidents involve pedestrians and 10% involve vehicles in the city. He said that accidents are also increasing due to overloading. He said that transporters earn money, but they don’t spend it. Cars everywhere in the world have a lifespan. In our country, cars from the 1970s are still running. Trackers in vehicles are a major need of the hour and the number of singles should also increase,
He said that there is a need to increase the budget of the DA’s Traffic Engineering Bureau, Dr. Qaiser Sajjad said that roads have been dug up in the city, due to which accidents are increasing, sidewalks have been occupied, pedestrians do not find a way, and awareness among drivers is also necessary. In addition, drivers must have a valid license, drivers must undergo a medical test, and road infrastructure also needs to be improved. We travel an hour and a half to Dubai and follow all the rules. Why aren’t they followed here? Dr. Sabir Memon said that we have forgotten road safety.
He said that when vehicles collide, there is a clash of laws. He said that there has been a decrease in accidents in 3 years. He said that we have to prove ourselves as responsible citizens. He said that most of the accidents affect young people. Dr. Irfan said that Jinnah Hospital is the largest hospital in the province. 250 people are brought here every day after accidents, of which 70 percent are men and 30 percent are women. Among them, the number of men and young people is higher.
He said that one-wheeling and speeding have become commonplace in Defense Phase 8, and the laws in the country have been weakened. He said that heavy traffic is also a cause of accidents and that motorcyclists’ failure to use helmets and goggles leads to traffic accidents. Faisal Edhi said that the income of orthopedic doctors has increased tremendously due to the increase in traffic accidents. He said that due to the simplicity of the licensing rules, people remain trained and bring vehicles on the roads.
