KARACHI – May 24, 2025 : Amir Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has called on the federal government to increase the tax exemption threshold for salaried individuals to Rs1.44 million annually — equivalent to Rs120,000 per month — in the upcoming federal budget for the fiscal year 2025-26.
Speaking at a press conference in Karachi on Saturday, the JI chief emphasized that the salaried class is already facing significant financial pressure due to inflation and rising living costs, and should not be further burdened through taxation.
“The government must broaden the tax base by bringing feudal landlords into the tax net instead of overburdening the working class,” Hafiz Naeem said.
He also demanded a reduction in electricity tariffs across the country, particularly in Karachi, where he criticized K-Electric for delivering the most expensive power in Pakistan.
“Load shedding in Karachi has made life unbearable for its residents. The K-Electric mafia must be held accountable,” he added, warning of a protest siege of K-Electric offices if immediate relief is not provided.
On the international front, Hafiz Naeem announced a major Gaza March to be held in Hyderabad on June 1, urging the Pakistani government to actively support the Palestinian cause.
Tax Relief for Salaried Class Likely in Budget FY2025-26
Meanwhile, government sources suggest that tax relief for the salaried class is being seriously considered in ongoing budget talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to ARY News, the Prime Minister has directed that relief measures be included for salaried individuals after tax collection from this segment exceeded expectations in the current fiscal year.
Sources indicate that income tax relief of 2.5% across all slabs is under consideration, with the tax-free annual income limit potentially being raised to Rs1 million from the current Rs600,000.
The final details are expected to be unveiled with the federal budget next month.
