Prices of ghee and cooking oil in Pakistan have been increased by up to Rs20 per kilogram, even before the Federal Budget 2025-26 has officially taken effect.
According to media reports, several manufacturing companies have unilaterally raised the prices by Rs10 to Rs20 per kg. A one-kilogram pouch of ghee or cooking oil is now retailing between Rs560 and Rs570, up from the earlier rate of Rs550.
Farid Qureshi, General Secretary of the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA), confirmed that some producers had raised prices in anticipation of the new budget, even though it hasn’t been implemented yet.
The development highlights the lack of an effective price control mechanism in the country, as manufacturers continue to increase rates independently.
This price hike follows the government’s recent decision to raise petroleum prices due to newly imposed taxes in the upcoming budget, putting additional pressure on consumers already grappling with inflation.
