In a troubling development, Hindu extremists reportedly attacked the residence of Colonel Sofia Qureshi, a Muslim officer and spokesperson for the Indian armed forces, on Wednesday. The attackers allegedly vandalized her home and assaulted her family members.
The incident is believed to be linked to recent inflammatory remarks made by Madhya Pradesh minister and BJP leader Vijay Shah, who had controversially referred to Colonel Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists.” His statement drew widespread criticism, with opposition parties demanding his immediate dismissal.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned Shah’s comments, calling them “derogatory” and urging his removal from the state cabinet.
Colonel Qureshi has been a key figure in military communications, regularly briefing the press alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri about Operation Sindoor, a military campaign directed against Pakistan.
Reports circulating on social media suggest that RSS-affiliated individuals were involved in the alleged attack on Qureshi’s home in Gokak, Belagavi district. Further official confirmation is awaited.
