In a ruling that has reverberated throughout France, a court has sentenced Dominique Pélicot to 20 years in prison for orchestrating the repeated assaults on his wife, Gisèle Pélicot, by numerous strangers over nearly a decade.

Additionally, fifty other individuals implicated in the crime received varying prison sentences.

Dominique utilized the internet to enlist strangers, inviting them to his residence to assault his wife, whom he had drugged into a state of unconsciousness. According to law enforcement, a total of 72 men assaulted the victim on 92 separate occasions, with 51 of them identified and prosecuted. The offenders, whose ages ranged from 26 to 74, faced legal proceedings for their roles in these atrocious acts.

Some defendants contended in court that they were merely acting on the couple’s wishes. However, Dominique confessed during questioning that all participants were aware that his wife was incapacitated and oblivious to the assaults.

Background

Gisèle Pélicot, now 72 years old, remained unaware of the crimes until 2020, when she was informed by the police. During the assaults, which commenced in 2011 while the couple resided near Paris, she had been in a drug-induced state resembling a coma.

Dominique admitted to investigators that he administered potent sedatives, including Temesta, to render his wife unconscious. Prosecutors disclosed that he not only took part in the assaults but also recorded the incidents and urged the other men to use derogatory language.

The trial revealed the extent of Dominique’s involvement, highlighting instances where certain men assaulted Gisèle multiple times—up to six occasions.

Upon the announcement of the sentence, Dominique was observed slumped in his chair, weeping. Meanwhile, his family exchanged hushed remarks, and Gisèle leaned her head against a wall, visibly distressed by the proceedings.

This case has shocked France, igniting widespread outrage and prompting discussions about the necessity for more stringent measures against such crimes. The trial has illuminated not only the unimaginable suffering endured by the victim but also the collective complicity of those who participated.
