CCP and CAP officials discuss consumer protection and deceptive marketing in Karachi
The discussion took place during a meeting at the CAP head office in Karachi. CCP Member Bushra Nasr Malik and CCP Director Amin met CAP Chairman Kaukab Iqbal and senior office-bearers.
The meeting focused on consumer protection, fair competition, misleading advertising and issues affecting consumers across Pakistan.
Focus on Food Labelling
Kaukab Iqbal called for mandatory production and expiry dates on all food products. He said consumers should be able to see this information clearly on product packaging.
He stressed that buyers should not have to search for expiry information. They should also not have to rely solely on verbal assurances from sellers.
According to Iqbal, clear date marking is essential for food safety. It also helps consumers make informed purchasing decisions.
The CAP chairman also raised concerns about eggs being sold without proper date marking.
He urged food regulatory authorities across Pakistan to introduce and enforce a system for marking eggs with relevant production or packing dates. Expiry or best-before information should also be provided where required by food-safety regulations.
“Eggs are an essential part of our daily diet and an important source of protein,” Iqbal said. He added that consumers have a right to know the freshness and safety of the eggs they purchase.
He stressed that the issue requires nationwide attention. Eggs are consumed daily by millions of people, including children.
Action Against Misleading Marketing
The meeting also examined deceptive marketing practices in the food sector.
Kaukab Iqbal urged the CCP and relevant food authorities to investigate misleading claims. He called for appropriate action where consumers are provided with incomplete or inaccurate information.
Meanwhile, participants discussed similar concerns in the real estate sector.
Iqbal said advertisements for housing schemes and property projects should contain complete and verifiable information. He warned that misleading claims can cause significant financial losses for consumers.
These claims may relate to project approvals, facilities, development status, possession, location and other important features.
He called for stronger monitoring of real estate advertising. He also urged greater coordination among regulatory bodies to protect consumers from exaggerated or misleading promotions.

Kaukab Iqbal appreciated the visit by Bushra Nasr Malik and CCP Director Amin. He said stronger cooperation between the CCP and CAP could contribute to a fairer and more transparent marketplace.
As a token of appreciation, Iqbal presented a memento to Bushra Nasr Malik.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue dialogue on consumer rights, deceptive marketing, food safety, transparent labelling, fair competition and consumer welfare across Pakistan.
