Bournemouth University Launches Defence Technology Courses With MoD Funding to Strengthen UK Cyber Security Skills

Bournemouth University is expanding its Defence Technology education programs after receiving approximately £2.8 million in funding from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). The investment will help launch new specialist courses designed to prepare students for emerging national security challenges.
The new Defence Technology initiative matters because cyber threats, autonomous systems, and AI-powered technologies are becoming increasingly important to national resilience. As a result, students will gain practical skills that align with growing workforce demands across the defence sector.

Bournemouth University Defence Technology Expansion
Bournemouth University announced that two new courses will begin in September. These programs include Cyber Defence Intelligence and Autonomous Systems, both designed to address evolving security and technological challenges.
The university will also create two dedicated facilities where students can gain practical experience in realistic environments. Furthermore, these facilities aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements.
Ministry of Defence Supports Defence Technology Training
The Ministry of Defence awarded Bournemouth University funding as part of a wider initiative supporting defence-related education across England.
The institution is among 24 universities and colleges receiving a share of £80 million. Consequently, more student places and improved training facilities will become available for defence-focused programs.
Cyber Defence Intelligence Course Facilities
Students enrolled in the Cyber Defence Intelligence course will train at a dedicated centre located within the MoD’s BattleLab at Dorset Innovation Park near Wool.
The facility will simulate cyber threats and security incidents. Therefore, students can develop practical skills in detecting, analysing, and responding to potential cyber attacks in controlled environments.
Professor Alison Honour, vice-chancellor of Bournemouth University, reportedly said the courses would enable the next generation of cyber professionals to contribute actively to national resilience.
Autonomous Systems Course Focuses on AI
The Autonomous Systems course will be supported by a specialist laboratory on the university’s Talbot Campus.
Students will study advancements in drone technology and AI-powered systems. In addition, the course will examine autonomous platforms designed for land, air, and sea operations.
The new facility will include an outdoor training area and a specialised water tank. As a result, learners can test and evaluate autonomous vehicles across multiple deployment environments.
Christos Gatzidis Highlights Strategic Challenges
Professor Christos Gatzidis, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dean for the Faculty of Media, Science and Technology, stated that students would gain knowledge needed to help protect critical infrastructure and strengthen national defence capabilities.
He also noted that graduates could contribute to the development of intelligent technologies. Moreover, the university aims to prepare students for careers in sectors experiencing strong demand for specialised technical expertise.

The university plans to create a covered testing zone that can simulate adverse weather conditions and signal disruption scenarios.
