Burglary in Karachi

An important issue to discuss, which is the constant and high number of burglary in Karachi. The streets have never been the safest place for the residents, and 2022 has been a year that fulfills what is said about the city once again. Street crimes have never been seen in more significant numbers 56 people have lost their lives while 269 people have been injured defending themselves or refusing to be looted in a month. These are only the numbers that have been recorded.

During the past two to three months, Sindh Police Officials suggested that Karachi has noticed a great increase in street crime and one big factor is the migration of people from the flood-affected areas of Pakistan to Karachi to make a living. Due to a lack of jobs, and skills, and due to self-interest, burglary was evident once again, due to a lack of security and street lights, the residents were at the receiving end of it. According to the police officers, half of the criminals they had arrested and detained were from other regions of the nation.

According to ARY News, an alleged robber was captured by citizens and turned over to police after being publicly beaten here in Karachi. The incident reportedly occurred in the Numaish Chowrangi neighborhood of Karachi, where a robber tried to rob locals.  However, in response to the elderly man’s cries, some bystanders overpowered the thief and beat him up before turning him over to the police. According to The News website, over 19,000 mobile phones, 104 cars, and 1383 bikes were stolen from people. A total of 35,000 residents had their motorcycles taken away during various incidents in the city. In Karachi, there have been 303 or so reported instances of house robberies.

Inspector-General Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon gave CM Sindh Murad a briefing about the special actions taken by the police to reduce street crime during the meeting. He claimed that police patrols and an intelligence-based operation are currently in progress to deal with criminals. The IGP reported that 86 incidents of mobile theft were reported in July, compared to 26 incidents in June. A total of 4,195 motorcycle theft incidents were reported to the police in June, and 3,849 bikes were taken in July.

“Karachi needs to be cleaned of street criminals,” were the words of the Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah in a meeting related to the issue last month in September. The committee also looked at the state of law and order and how well the police were doing at stopping street crimes. Therefore; with this letter, I would to request the concerned authorities to look into this matter and take quick measures to make Karachi a safe place to live.
