New Zealand: Cardrona’s controversial bra fence is said to have started in 1999 when four bras appeared overnight on a fence along the Cardrona Valley Road. The colourful attraction raised eyebrows among a few stuffy locals but passersby started adding their undergarments to the fence on the way past.

  • Hundreds of colourful bras of all shapes and sizes adorn the fence.

In October 2000, the number of bras had reached around 200, and again the fence was cleared of bras. This time the story spread even wider, as the fence had become to some a quirky tourist attraction, and media sources from as far afield as Europe became interested in the fence. The number of bras being added to the fence personally or sent increased dramatically. The number of bras attached to the fence stood at close to 800 in early 2006.

  • The Cardrona Bra Fence has raised more than $30,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

The infamous fence was rebranded to “Bradrona” in 2015 to raise money for breast cancer and $30,000 has been raised by people leaving donations in a box at the site. When visiting Cardrona Valley Bra Fence, you were grateful to see the international community of support for those on their breast cancer journey.

In December 2020, Mrs Moira Turner tidying up & washing the dusty bras, back in the silly fun days of Cardrona, New Zealand.

Mrs Turner noticed that the bra fence was also a bit dusty and tardy, in its early days and took her washing machine down and did a bit of dusting to tart it up a little for the passing public.

Nowadays hundreds of colourful bras of all shapes and sizes adorn the fence, providing a good photo opportunity along the picturesque road.
