ISLAMABAD – To support the Government’s climate change and green energy initiatives, Engro Corporation has implemented a 1 MW solarization project under the Green Presidency Initiative, turning Aiwan-i-Sadr into one of the only few presidencies in the world to be fully powered by green energy.
A brainchild of His Excellency, The President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, the roll out of Green Presidency Initiative started off with an extensive sustainability and energy efficiency audit that culminated into successful execution of purpose-driven solutions. Under this initiative, Engro Energy – a subsidiary of Engro Corporation – installed a state-of-the-art 1 MW solar panel system at the Presidency that will help reduce carbon emissions by 1400 tons and contribute savings of around Rs 32 million to the national exchequer. For context, this is equivalent to planting 57,000 mature trees. With net metering, a 100 percent surplus energy is also being contributed to the national grid.
The Green Presidency initiative also qualifies for Green Building credits that have been achieved through sustainable practices including, rainwater management, water metering, waste management and self-sustaining vegetation. The initiative is part of the PTI Government’s long-term sustainability agenda being propelled through a multitude of projects across the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Ghias Khan – President & CEO of Engro Corporation, said that, “Pakistan is the fifth most vulnerable country to climate change and we must take immediate actions to address the adverse effects of global warming. The Government’s initiatives to prioritize the sustainability agenda are commendable and Engro stands committed to play its part to support these initiatives. As sustainability is at the heart of our decisions at Engro, we are working aggressively towards developing our net zero ambitions and promoting renewable energy in the Energy business vertical.”
Acknowledging the contribution of Engro towards this role model public-private partnership, His Excellency Dr. Arif Alvi, shared that, “Our traditions and Islamic values call for promoting conservation and responsible consumption of natural resources. We all need to show a commitment towards sustainability so that the footprint of growing population can be managed. With globally acclaimed initiatives like the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami, the Government is making all efforts to develop a more sustainable future for Pakistan and, at the same time, encouraging the corporate sector to fulfill its social responsibility by participating in these efforts.”
The Green Presidency Initiative is expected to serve as a model for green buildings and sustainability throughout the country. It is a testament to the impact that can be created to combat climate change through mutual collaboration and innovative thinking.
