KARACHI: World Photography Day was celebrated at the French Cultural Centre in Karachi with a special exhibition showcasing photographs by Professor Rahmatullah Khan and his students.
The event highlighted photography as a powerful art form that preserves memories, emotions and history. It also provided young photographers with an opportunity to display their creative work.
Photography in the Digital Age
Speaking at the event, Professor Rahmatullah Khan said photography has changed significantly since its early days. He noted that technological advances have made photography more accessible while creating new opportunities for creativity.
However, he said technology alone cannot create a good photograph. Strong observation, creative thinking and the ability to capture the right moment remain essential skills for photographers.
Emmanuel Breurec, Director of the French Cultural Centre, said photography crosses linguistic and cultural boundaries. He described it as a universal form of communication capable of conveying emotions and stories.
Breurec said the French Cultural Centre would continue supporting photography and other artistic disciplines. He added that the centre aims to give emerging artists opportunities to showcase their talent.
Tribute to Shakil Adil
The exhibition was formally inaugurated by Emmanuel Breurec and Professor Rahmatullah Khan. The ceremony also included a cake-cutting event to mark World Photography Day.
A major highlight was a tribute to veteran Karachi photojournalist Shakil Adil. Organisers presented him with a commemorative shield in recognition of more than four decades of service to photojournalism.
