Visual Advertising: Memorable Images Drive Consumer Purchases More Than Emotional Campaigns, Study Finds
New research suggests visually engaging advertisements improve brand recall and increase purchase intentions, while emotional appeals alone have little impact on buying decisions.

Memorable visual advertising has a greater influence on consumer purchasing decisions than emotionally driven campaigns, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Business and Systems Research. The research found that advertisements with strong visual appeal are more likely to encourage purchases because they improve how well consumers remember the message.
Researchers analyzed survey responses from more than 400 participants using structural equation modeling, a statistical method that evaluates relationships between multiple variables. The study explored how four key advertising characteristics—provocativeness, emotional tone, cultural relevance, and visual appeal—affected consumers’ intention to buy through emotional response and advertisement recall.
The findings showed that provocative advertisements and culturally relevant messages successfully triggered emotional reactions. However, those emotions did not significantly increase consumers’ willingness to make a purchase. Likewise, an advertisement’s emotional tone neither improved recall nor strengthened purchase intentions.

In contrast, advertisements with compelling visual design consistently enhanced advertisement recall. Consumers who remembered the advertisements more clearly also showed a stronger intention to buy the promoted products. The researchers concluded that memory plays a more important role than emotion in turning advertising exposure into purchasing behavior.
The study also addresses a longstanding gap in advertising research. Previous studies have focused largely on credibility, trust, and informativeness, while giving less attention to the impact of provocative content and culturally tailored messaging.
As competition for attention intensifies across social media and digital platforms, the findings suggest brands should prioritize memorable visual design over emotional appeals alone. Researchers say advertisers can improve campaign effectiveness by combining eye-catching visuals with messages that remain easy to remember, rather than relying solely on emotional or controversial content.
