KARACHI: Authorities launched a major crackdown against encroachers on property owned by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society in Orangi Town after illegal occupants controlled the land for more than 40 years.

Officials said the land mafia built over 100 shops on the property. They also started commercial activities on the site decades ago.
The Red Crescent administration repeatedly tried to recover the land. However, several hurdles delayed the operation for years.
Rehan Hashmi Accelerates Recovery Efforts
After assuming office, Rehan Hashmi intensified efforts to reclaim the property.
He contacted the Karachi commissioner, mayor, Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), and other institutions for support.
After completing legal formalities, SBCA teams launched the anti-encroachment operation and started clearing the site.
Welfare and Medical Projects Planned
Officials said the recovered land will now support welfare activities.
The Pakistan Red Crescent Society plans to establish medical facilities, community development centers, educational projects, and vocational training programs at the location.
In addition, authorities expect reconstruction work to begin next month. Officials are also considering free medical camps and training programs for local residents.
Residents Welcome the Operation
Residents welcomed the anti-encroachment drive and praised the welfare initiative.
They said the land should benefit the public instead of illegal commercial interests. They also hoped the planned projects would support families living in Orangi Town, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements.
