Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday said Houston’s newly amended policy on how police interact with federal immigration agents passes muster with him, but that the Houston Police Department “still has not agreed to the terms of what the contract requires.”
Houston City Council this week amended its recently approved policy after Abbott’s office threatened $114 million in city grants, despite some council members saying the changes will dilute the policy’s effectiveness. But HPD has not yet reflected those changes in its internal documents.
“We just need to make sure that the police department goes along with the verbiage that we agreed to and what the city of Houston passed,” Abbott said before a campaign event in Conroe on Wednesday evening. “It better happen in the next 24 hours.”
Whitmire’s office and HPD did not immediately return calls seeking a response to Abbott’s comments.
