The Basque side sealed victory in the shootout when Pablo Marin converted the decisive spot-kick, after goalkeeper Unai Marrero made crucial saves to deny Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez.
Real Sociedad made a dream start, scoring the fastest goal in a Copa del Rey final as Ander Barrenetxea headed home just 14 seconds into the match. Atletico responded through Ademola Lookman, who drilled a powerful strike into the bottom corner after a setup from Antoine Griezmann.
Mikel Oyarzabal restored Sociedad’s lead from the penalty spot before halftime after Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso conceded a foul in the box. However, Atletico fought back again with a superb goal from Julian Alvarez, forcing extra time.
Both sides created chances in added time, but neither could find a winner, sending the final to penalties. Marrero emerged as the hero, making two key saves before Marin calmly slotted home the winning kick.
The victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Real Sociedad under coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, who revitalized the team after taking charge in December.
For Atletico Madrid and manager Diego Simeone, the defeat represents a missed opportunity to secure silverware this season, leaving their hopes now focused on European competition.
