Karachi: Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho has announced significant progress in the ongoing “Nejat-e-Mehran” operation, aimed at clearing the Kacha Area of armed dacoits. Since January, police have killed 32 bandits, arrested over 100 suspects, and secured the surrender of 225 criminals. The IGP expressed confidence that the area would be fully cleared by next month, allowing residents to travel safely with their families.

Odho shared these updates while addressing industrialists at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI). The event was attended by KATI President Muhammad Ikram Rajput, Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya, and other senior business and law enforcement officials.

Highlighting improvements in citywide law and order, Odho cited official data showing a 54% drop in motorcycle snatching, 48% decline in car snatching, and a 35% decrease in mobile phone thefts compared to last year. Murders during armed snatching have fallen by 88%, reflecting tangible gains in public safety.

The IGP stressed that while police efforts are crucial, public cooperation is equally important. He highlighted the Safe City project, now in its second phase, which involves installing 2,225 modern surveillance cameras with facial recognition across Karachi. Traffic management improvements and stricter enforcement of road laws are also underway, with FIRs to be registered against violators.

Odho announced the repair and reactivation of 100 police mobile units and the provision of additional vehicles to four police stations in Korangi’s industrial zone. Monthly task force meetings will now be held at the IGP office to ensure ongoing coordination with the business community.

Addressing the role of drug addiction in crime, the IGP called for functional rehabilitation centers, urging associations and institutions to establish facilities that reintegrate affected individuals into society.

KATI President Muhammad Ikram Rajput lauded the sacrifices of Sindh Police personnel in maintaining security, emphasizing that law and order is vital for economic activity. He highlighted the Safe City project as a potential game changer, capable of enhancing surveillance, crime prevention, and investigative standards in Karachi.

Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya revealed that six major exporters in Korangi contribute $1.5 billion in exports, approximately 5% of Pakistan’s total, while the overall industrial area accounts for 9% of national exports. Task force initiatives have helped counter blackmail and other criminal threats targeting businesses.

Other attendees, including Zahid Saeed, Khalid Tawab, and Danish Khan, recognized improvements in security and called for continued reforms, better policing practices, and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. The event concluded with SVP Zahid Hameed reaffirming the business community’s support for initiatives to ensure peace and stability in Karachi.
