ISLAMABAD – In a major step to support exporters and stimulate economic growth, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs has announced a 50% reduction in charges for export and transshipment containers handled through the Port Qasim Authority, effective from July 1, 2025, ARY News reported.

The relief applies to cargo at Port Qasim terminals, including Marginal Wharf, FOTCO, and PIBT. Wharfage charges for export and transshipment containers have been halved as part of the new policy. Additionally, containerized cargo handled at DP World will also benefit from relaxed charges. However, the ministry clarified that no concessions will be provided for empty containers.

This reduction will remain in effect for one year and is intended to ease costs for traders, encourage exports, and strengthen the country’s maritime economy.

At a strategic meeting held earlier on June 23, Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering local businesses and boosting domestic trade through ports and fisheries. He emphasized ongoing reforms in the maritime sector and reaffirmed support for the business community.

The minister also announced the upcoming establishment of an Aquaculture Industrial Zone to encourage investment in marine and aquaculture industries. He revealed that Pakistan’s first Marine and Aquaculture Policy is on the way, aiming to provide a sustainable development framework for these sectors.

According to the Ministry, the Marine Fisheries Department has already achieved its export target of $410 million this year, while the ship recycling industry has generated Rs6 billion in revenue, signaling robust growth in Pakistan’s maritime sectors.

Minister Chaudhry also stressed the importance of adopting green shipping practices to align with international environmental standards and promote sustainable maritime development.
