KP Government Completes Seven Hydropower Projects, More Underway

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has successfully completed seven hydropower projects, with work in progress on twelve more, according to Secretary Energy and Power, Muhammad Zubair Khan.

During a high-level review meeting, Secretary Energy highlighted the significant economic benefits these projects would bring, particularly in boosting the province’s industrial sector. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO), Engr Riaz Ahmed Jan, shared updates, noting that the completed projects are generating 161 megawatts of electricity, contributing over Rs 4 billion in annual revenue.

Ongoing Energy Projects

Twelve additional projects, covering hydropower, solar energy, and transmission lines, are currently under construction. Key initiatives include:

  • 300 MW Balakot Mansehra
  • 157 MW Madyen Swat
  • 88 MW Gabral Kalam
  • 84 MW Matiltan Swat
  • 69 MW Lawi Chitral
  • 8 MW Koto Dir
  • 8 MW Krora Shangla
  • 5 MW Chapri Charkhel Kuram
  • 9 MW Mujahideen Power Project Torghar

Once completed, these projects will generate a total of 778 megawatts, providing KP with an annual income exceeding Rs 45 billion.

Solar Energy Transition

Project Director Solar, Engr Asfandyar, briefed the meeting on the government’s plans to shift major infrastructure to solar energy. This initiative includes converting 8,000 schools, 5,762 mosques, 6,650 houses, 187 primary health units, and key government buildings, including the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, to solar power.

These efforts are part of KP’s broader strategy to enhance energy self-sufficiency and economic growth through sustainable power solutions.
