Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting observed by Muslims globally, is expected to start in spring 2025, with Eid al-Fitr marking its conclusion.

According to a report by Samaa News on Thursday, the exact dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon, though predictions based on lunar calculations have been made.

When will Ramadan begin?

Estimates suggest Ramadan 2025 will likely begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, or Saturday, March 1. The precise date will be confirmed closer to the time through the traditional moon sighting, a key practice in Islam.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a time for fasting, prayer, and charity. Healthy adult Muslims are expected to refrain from food and drink from dawn to sunset, focusing on spiritual growth and community service.

Eid al-Fitr 2025

Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of Ramadan, is predicted to fall on Sunday, March 30, or Monday, March 31. As with Ramadan, the exact date will depend on the sighting of the Shawwal moon.

Eid al-Fitr is a joyous occasion filled with communal prayers, festive meals, and charitable giving. Muslims are not permitted to fast on this day, highlighting gratitude and unity.

Moon sighting tradition

The Islamic calendar is lunar, causing dates to shift by about 10 days earlier each year. This rotation brings Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr into different seasons, affecting the fast’s length and conditions.

Local and global moon-sighting committees will meet closer to the dates to confirm the crescent moon’s sighting. This not only determines the start and end of Ramadan but also represents the global unity of Muslims.
