Karachi : November 26, 2024 : The Women Development Department, Government of Sindh, in collaboration with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), organized an event under the theme “Empowering Women in Pakistan’s Textile Industry” as part of the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign. The event was held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Karachi
During her address, Ms. Shahina Sher Ali, Provincial Minister for Women Development, emphasized the need for a zero-tolerance policy towards gender-based violence (GBV) in workplaces.
Mr. Rashid Ahmed Zardari, Secretary of the Women Development Department, highlighted the significance of the 16-day campaign, stating, “Every year, we observe this campaign to reaffirm our commitment to eradicating gender-based violence worldwide.”
Ms. Saqiba Aziz, Component Manager (GIZ), presented a project titled “Strengthening Women’s Role in the Textile Industry to Promote Employment,” showcasing the project’s role in promoting gender equality.
Success stories of women excelling in the textile sector were shared by AGI Denim, Artistic Milliners, and Mustaqim Industries, highlighting their efforts and commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment in the textile industry.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Ashiq Hussain Kalhoro, Deputy Director of the Women Development Department, stated that 28% of women in Pakistan are affected by gender-based violence, which negatively impacts societal well-being and economic productivity.
Leaders from various organizations related to the textile industry recognized the GIZ W.E. Project as a positive step towards gender equality and sustainable economic development.
At the conclusion of the event, the guests congratulated Sadiq Akbar, Saqiba Aziz, and the entire GIZ team on the launch of the W.E. Project in Sindh.
