Karachi : This letter is being written to your esteemed newspaper as it serves as a highly respected platform to address this ongoing issue. Religious freedom in Pakistan remains a pressing issue, particularly for minorities such as Hindus, Christians, Parsis and Sikhs. Despite constitutional guarantees, these communities often face discrimination, violence, and social marginalization, underscoring the urgent need to address these challenges. A significant concern is the misuse of blasphemy laws. Since 1987, over 1,800 people have been accused under these laws, disproportionately targeting minorities. Christians are among those severely impacted, with many facing false accusations and mob violence. In August 2023, a massive mob attack in Jaranwala, Punjab, was triggered by blasphemy allegations against two Christian men. The mob burned down 26 churches, vandalized Christian homes, and desecrated cemeteries. Despite some arrests, many perpetrators have not faced justice, leaving the Christian community fearful of further attacks. Attacks on places of worship continue to strain religious harmony. In addition to the Jaranwala incident, Christians have faced growing persecution, including mob violence in Faisalabad in August 2023, where churches and homes were attacked. Similar incidents,
including vandalism of Hindu places of worship and attacks on Christians, highlight the inconsistent enforcement of protections by local authorities. As I can speak specifically regarding the Christian community in Pakistan, it is
disheartening to witness the persistent challenges my people continue to face today. Many stories of these incidents go largely unnoticed, even within our own circles of family and friends. Moreover, religion should be recognized as a deeply personal journey, one that deserves respect and protection, regardless of one’s faith. In these pressing times, it is crucial that this principle be considered, ensuring that individuals of all religions are
afforded the freedom and dignity to practice their beliefs without fear. For Pakistan to ensure genuine religious freedom, it is essential to reform blasphemy laws, enforce protections for all religious minorities, including Christians, and promote interfaith harmony. These steps are crucial for Pakistan’s path toward a more inclusive and tolerant society.
