Karachi : In Pakistan, electricity load shedding has grown to be a major impediment to economic
expansion, impacting almost all economic sectors. Frequent and protracted power outages
reduce productivity in both small businesses and industry when the demand for electricity
exceeds the supply. Manufacturing industries that depend on a steady supply of electricity
frequently experience operational disturbances, which raises costs, delays production
schedules, and reduces productivity.
Pakistan's ability to compete in the global market is hampered by this unpredictability, which
deters local investment and causes interruptions that slow and degrade the quality of exports
from important sectors like agriculture and textiles. The foundation of Pakistan's economy, small
and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), are particularly negatively affected by load shedding.
These businesses often lack the resources to invest in expensive backup power solutions, The
economic toll of unreliable electricity is compounded by the costs of mitigating its effects, with
funds being diverted from development projects to meet immediate energy needs. These
businesses often lack the resources to invest in costly backup power solutions, forcing many to
operate at a reduced capacity or, in some cases, shut down entirely.
As a result, poverty rates rise as more people lose stable employment, and the economy as a
whole suffers as small businesses struggle. Additionally, load shedding places a heavy burden
on public infrastructure and essential services, making it difficult for hospitals, educational
institutions, and other essential facilities to function smoothly. Furthermore, the unpredictable
energy situation discourages international investors by posing a risk to their capital and
impeding economic expansion. In order to maintain sustainable economic growth, attract
investment, and sustain the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on a reliable power
supply for their everyday tasks and general well-being, Pakistan must address its electricity
shortage.
