Rawalpindi: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has reiterated calls for reduced electricity tariffs and a review of agreements with independent power producers (IPPs). Addressing a Rawalpindi rally, Rehman criticized the government for empowering IPPs and imposing high capacity charges on the poor. He urged the government to renegotiate or annul existing contracts with IPPs.
In response, the government has formed a technical committee to address JI’s concerns and announced the release of detained JI workers. Further talks are planned to resolve issues related to electricity bills and other demands. Rehman pledged continued protests until the government acted on their demands.
